2020 Summer Classes

Mr. G will be teaching two types of summer classes this year: a once-a-week class held on Saturdays in June/July, and week-long intensive-writing classes held in June, July & August.

The classes will be for students entering 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th grades in the fall. (Those currently in 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grade.)

Mr. G will not be teaching entering 4th graders over the summer (although he will be teaching 4th graders in the fall.)

Saturday Classes (June/July)

Over the course of this four-session set of classes, students will read a book, learn vocabulary, and write three compositions: a literary analysis essay, a research simulation task essay, and a narrative.

Classes will be taught on the following Saturdays: June 27, July 11, 18 & 25. (Students will have Sat., July 4th, off.)

The schedule is as follows:

Intensive Writing Classes

(June/July/August)

Seven sets of intensive-writing classes will be taught over the summer. The sets taught in June and July will be four-classes (four days) long, featuring four 1.5-hour sessions (except for entering 9th graders, whose classes will each be 2 hours long).

The set of classes taught in the last two weeks of August will be five classes (five days) long, featuring five 1.5-hour sessions (except for entering 9th graders, whose classes will each be 2 hours long).

The entire focus of the classes will be on writing only. The intensive-writing classes offered in June & July will concentrate on one type of writing per week. (See below for the types covered.) As many as three compositions will be written each week, so students will study each composition type in depth.

The intensive-writing classes in August will give students practice in responding to the three types of prompts found on the NJSLA: the narrative, the literary analysis essay, and the research simulation task essay.

In all intensive-writing classes, students will read and study sample compositions and receive detailed feedback from Mr. G. They will also be asked to revise and improve their compositions as necessary.
